Key West is a beautiful island city at the southernmost end of United States Route 01, the longest north-south road in the Country. Just off the Miami mainland coastline, Key West is the westernmost island connected by the highway in the Florida Keys cluster. Key West features a unique blend of cultural influences from the mainland north and the southern neighbours. The colourful history of the four- by two-mile island is filled with tales of death and rebirth. Key West’s early economy relied heavily on sponge-fishing and the risky but lucrative “wrecking,” where locals salvaged the goods of ships that run aground in the shallow waters surrounding the island. The island is about 153 km north of Cuba at their closest points. The piece of land is closer to Cuba than it is to America.
